HIV/AIDS

Overview

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the cells that help the body to fight off infections. Without the cells that help fight off infections, patients with HIV are much more susceptible to getting sick. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

While there is no cure for HIV, there are treatments available known as antiretroviral therapy or ART. If these medications are taken as prescribed, it can greatly reduce the amount of HIV in the blood.
